When both my son and daughter were baptized, they wore the same christening gown that I wore.
My christening gown had been stored for 35 years before my Mom pulled it out of the closet and gave it to me.
It had been put away in a cardboard box and had yellowed greatly. My staff and I were able to restore the gown to it’s original antique white color.
After my son and, later on, my daughter had been baptized I cleaned the gown and boxed it for storage.
This time around the gown had been placed into the correct storage box. Only acid neutral materials are in contact with the fabric. It is the same box used by the Metropolitan Museum of Art for Textile conservation. It is a small version of the same storage box that we use for bridal gowns.
In 35 years or so when my son or daughter needs the christening gown, it will be in great shape because it was taken care of the right way.
